Fine Arts Salon
Art exhibition, held at the annual Convention of the National Speleological Society, of drawings, paintings, sculpture, and other art forms not included in the other NSS salons.
The Fine Arts Salon is the official venue for exhibiting speleologically inspired artwork. Artwork can be in any medium, from painting and sketching to digitally altered photography, computer graphics, pottery and sculpture, textiles, and mixed media, cartoons, and poetry and verse. Entrants for the Fine Arts Salon are encouraged to incorporate the annual theme in their works. Non-themed entries will be judged in the Open Category. Entrants must be current, living members of the National Speleological Society
ENTRIES: All entry forms must be submitted one month before Convention. Do not send original artwork with entry form. Email entry forms to Carol Jackson at firstname.lastname@example.org. In addition to the entry form, submit good, professional looking digital images of each work entered for the Salon. Each digital image must be accompanied by: Name of artist, dimensions of the piece, art salon in which to be to be judged, (if judging is desired), and medium. All exhibits are encouraged to be sold at the salon or entered for NSS Auction. The NSS will deduct a 20% commission from all art sold. Previously awarded work is encouraged to be exhibited if not seen within 5 years, but will not be judged in the salon. Entry applications will be screened and artists will be notified by mail or e-mail of acceptance or rejection.
Accepted, ready to hang/display artwork must be shipped to the Convention address, provided on acceptance, to arrive in the Salon by 8 am Monday of convention.
CATEGORIES: Art will be judged in Two Categories:

OPEN - Any speleological subject
Each Category will be further divided into Five classes: Fine Art, Craft and Design, Textile, Cartoon, Letters.
A Certificate of Excellence will be awarded for each accepted work for show.
If warranted, a Merit Award pin and 2 Honorable Mention pins will be awarded in each Class.
Best of Show will be selected from overall merit winners, and will be awarded a pin and $100.
Judging for the Cavers’ Choice Award will be by caver ballot. Award is $100
ENTRY APPLICATION - Please click logo for the entry form. Print to complete, then mail, or scan to attach to email. Fine Art, Craft and Design, Textile, Cartoon and Letters entries may all be submitted on the same application.
ENTRY FEE - Adult fee, $15. Youth Fee (12 and under)$5. Entry fees are per person, regardless of number of juried entries. There will be a reduction for those who can assist with Salon week duties (contact the salon chair). Make checks for entry fees payable to the NSS FAS.
The number of entries is limited to 1 per person per category, (1 in each Class in Open category, 1 in each Class in Theme category) for competition. An optional additional 5 entries may be entered for show only, for an additional $10 fee. This provision is for artwork to be displayed, sold or auctioned, but not judged, if the artist so wishes.
JUDGING - Pre-selection for exhibition will occur prior to Convention. Judging will occur Monday of convention at 9am. The Cavers' Choice Award will be by ballot, which starts at the opening reception on Monday afternoon until Thursday at noon.
RIGHTS AND CONDITIONS:
All entrants retain copyright and all moral and intellectual rights to their work. Credit will be included with all objects displayed. The NSS requests the following rights, which are optional. Indicate your agreement by marking the box(es) on the entry form.
The NSS may project these images during the award ceremony.
The NSS may publish images of winning objects in periodicals for the purpose of showcasing contest winners, within one year of the contest.
The NSS may use low-resolution images of these works on Web sites to announce the winners of this competition, for not more than one year.
The NSS may use images of these works in low resolution in a CD/DVD of all entries for an indefinite period. This CD/DVD will be lent to NSS members for viewing at no charge.
