Central Arizona Grotto

Survey

This is an ongoing survey project of a large and mazey cave in Southern Arizona.
Its been mapped once before, but I don't have access to the original data or a good map.
Its possible that they don't exist. All I have left is a map on an 8 1/2"x11" sheet
with a ton of unfinished leads. So, we're going to push to do some quality survey
and produce a good map. I would like to have between two and four teams in cave at
any one time to make the most of our trips. Survey experience is not necessary and
newcomers are welcome. We have a few sketchers and could use more that are familiar
with Carlsbad Caverns National Park standards. Right now, we have completed about
1,000 feet of passage from the entrance, the entrance room, the gate crawl, and two
main corridors on the edge of the maze.

Oh yeah, I suspect you're wondering about the name of the cave... Its kind of a secret,
but I can tell you it Ain't Peppersauce.

Six CAG cavers made it for the March 1, survey in Ain't Peppersauce Cave. We were in-cave at about 10:30 am and exited around 6:00 pm. We split into two teams consisting of Ray, Bryan and Mark, and Taran, Rich and Scott.
Ray's team pushed the F survey on the western perimeter of the cave and arrived at the "main" formation room netting 512.6 feet of new passage. Taran's team bagged 162.9 feet of new passage in the A survey following the main loop trip route on the north and east edges of the central maze. Neither Rich nor Scott had done any survey work prior to this but they got the hang of it immediately and were almost always in good agreement with their instrument readings.
We had a good trip and stopped at the local pizza joint afterwards before driving back home. Thanks to all who participated.
We'll need to plan another trip soon. - Taran

Seven CAG cavers showed up for the April 13 survey in Ain't Peppersauce Cave.
Ray and Rich attended the EGI meeting on Friday night and elected to stay in Tucson for
the survey on Saturday. Todd, Stephanie, Chip, Bryan, and Taran met them at the cave
at 10am.
We split into two teams consisting of Ray, Bryan and Rich, and Taran, Chip,
Todd, and Stephanie. Ray's team continued in the F survey on the western perimeter of
the cave, spending most of their time in grim crawlways of the Hall of Resolution.
They booked about 344 feet of new survey. Taran's team completed 233 feet of new
passage in a lead that shoots perpendicularly to the north away from the A survey. This was
designated as the C survey. At its furthest point from the A survey run, it stops in a
junction room with passage in four directions, which we named "Fuzzy Apple Junction" for
the two rotting apple cores left by recent thoughtless visitors. We left the cave at
5:30pm.
As has become the custom, we stopped for pizza before the long drive back home.
Thanks to all who participated. - Taran
