Nov 29, 2013 Friday into weekend:  West Virginia Caving
Several members of the Central Connecticut Grotto will spend Thanksgiving weekend in the Greenbrier are of West Virginia. Special permission has been obtained to visit Savanna Lane Sink Cave, a recently discovered cave that has been featured in the July 2013 edition of the National Speleological Society News. Cavers from CT, NY, NJ, PA & MA plan attend the event. Sept 20-22, 2013:  Fall 2013 NRO
The SCAG is hosting this year's Fall NRO (Northeastern Regional Organization) at The Widow Jane Mine (see Century House) in Rosendale, NY. The CCG is providing the two breakfasts. More info at www.caves.org/region/nro/

July 6-13, 2013: 2013 Cave Rescue Operations and Management Seminar in Schoharie, NY. The seminar consists of extensive classroom and field work in all phases of cave rescue including underground environment, vertical rescue, hauling systems, extrication techniques, medical management, communication systems, and the organization and management of cave rescue operations. Basic and advanced course material is presented for students who typically include cavers, emergency service personnel, and emergency managers. Details at: 2013 Seminar

May 17-19, 2013 Friday-Sunday: Spring 2013 NRO
Location: Pittsfield,MA. The Boston Grotto will be hosting the Spring NRO (Northeast Regional Organization of the National Speleological Society) gathering. May 11, 2013 Saturday: Basic Vertical Caver Workshop
The New Jersey Initial Response Team (wilderness and cave rescue) will host a Basic Vertical Caver Workshop at the Sterling Mine, in Ogdensburg, NJ on May 11th starting at 08:00. This class is an entry level class for the novice vertical caver, but also is a great opportunity for more experienced vertical cavers to help out, and practice on difficult ledges and pass rebelays. The class will cover: Vertical caving equipment (what to buy and what not to), knot tying and safety. Practical (hands on) sessions will include: Rappelling, climbing, change overs, cable ladders, and belays. Participants are asked to donate $10.00, split between the team for rope gear wear, and the Sterling Hill Mining museum to cover the use of the facilities. Participants will need gloves, boots, and a vertical style helmet (no elastic straps, strap must have a quick release buckle). If you have a harness or climinb system bring it. We'll help you set it up. A limited number of climbing systems will be available for loan on a first confirmation basis. Class will run until 4 PM, bring a lunch. April 27, 2013 Saturday: Beginner / Intermediate Trip to Mines in Kingston NY The large limestone mines offers acres and acres of underground exploration in giant rooms. The mines require practically no crawling, but caver’s must carefully negotiate over mountains of breakdown and other rubble. For those interested, we will begin with the 110ft rappel into the test cut followed by visiting the Hasbrouck and Delaware mines. This time of year, it is common to see large pillars of ice in the mine. The CCG has some helmets and lights that beginners can borrow if reserved in advance. April 21, 2013 Sunday: Intermediate / Advanced Vertical Caving Workshop in Durham CT  A 70 ft tall overhanging cliff will be European style rigged with rebelays, deviations, and other challenges for cavers to practice techniques that all vertical cavers should know. April 26, 2014 Saturday: Beginner / Intermediate Vertical Caving Workshop in Central Connecticut. Focus will be primarily on teaching the basic skills for accessing the typical vertical caves that we have in the Northeast. The training site also has some bolted and overhung routes where more advanced courses can be set up. Please RSVP if interested so we can better estimate the need for grotto vertical gear and people to help with the training. The event is being held at their field station in Bath County, VA.
