Informal DCG Meetings

Rock Bottom Brewery/Resaurant

7900 Norfolk Av. (corner of St.Elmo Av.) Bethesda, MD

On the third Thursday of Feb., Apr., Jun., Aug., and Oct., the DC Grotto holds its so-called informal meeting. See the DCG Main-Page for the next specific date. For years, we met at the Hard Times Cafe in Bethesda, until it was found to be closed. Now, we are trying a new venue: the Rock Bottom Brewery/Restaurant in Bethesda, at 7900 Norfolk Av. (at corner of St.Elmo Av.). This is less than 3 blocks from our previous HTC venue.

We will try to meet in a semi-private corner, or such, where the main focus of the meeting starts at 7:30pm.   You are not required to buy dinner, but if you want to do so, you should probably arrive early (say 6:30pm), to allow time for ordering, eating, and socializing, before the main focus of the meeting.   There won't be a formal program, but there will be trip reports, announcements of upcoming trips and events, and the usual caving BS, with an occasional show-and-tell.

Check out Rock Bottom's web-site for a map, menu, prices, and other information.

Directions to the Rock Bottom, from the Beltway:

  1. Take Exit 36, Old Georgetown Rd (MD-187), toward Bethesda.
  2. After about 2.4 miles turn left onto Cordell Avenue, past Merchant Tire. (After you turn you will pass a County parking garage on the right).
  3. After one block turn right onto Norfolk Avenue. The Rock Bottom is on the right at the end of the block. (If you turn right on St Elmo Avenue just past Rock Bottom you will come to another entrance to the County parking garage on the right in 1/2 block).

Play with the map below, to see other approaches to the area, e.g. Wilson Lane (MD-188) from the west, or East-West Hwy (MD-410) from the east.

There is metered parking on the streets, although sometimes the nearest vacancy is more than 2-blocks away.   For parking meters in the County garage, the upper levels charge less per hour, and don't have the 2-hour limit of the first two levels (or the street).

Don't neglect your parking meter, even in the evening.   Lovely Rita is frighteningly efficient.
