A=appetizer; D=dessert; S=side/salad;
Attendees are divided into four groups, according to the first letter of the last name. It is thought that the choice of letter ranges achieves roughly equal size groups. For any year, two groups bring "S", another brings "A", and the other brings "D". To balance the load, combinations of "who-brings-what" should change from year to year.
Unfortunately, identical assignments were made in both 2013 and 2014; and, by 2016, both A-D and H-M had each brought "S" 3 out of the last 4 years. The 2017 assignments have balanced the load, so the assignment sequence for 2014 thru 2017 may be repeated ( in order ) for subsequent years. Ergo, assignments for any year henceforth should be the same as year-number minus 4, e.g.: 2018 the same as 2014.
For the 2018 flyer, I recommend:

To whomever is prepping this year's banquet Flyer: Last year (2017), the 1st draft of the banquet flyer had deserts being brought by Half! of the attendees! So, this led me to look, at that time, into what was assigned in previous years. The result was the message to Doug (below), which attempted some load-balancing for the 4 groups of attendees. Hopefully, the preparation of this year's flyer will take this info into account. Flyers for previous years are still online, at: http://caves.org/grotto/dcg/events/banquet17.pdf ( Just change that last digit in the address bar. ) Don ----- Forwarded message from Don Major <firstname.lastname@example.org> ----- Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2017 12:41:24 -0500 From: Don Major <email@example.com> To: Doug Duncan <firstname.lastname@example.org> Subject: recommended what-to-bring data Reply-To: email@example.com In-Reply-To: <CAH1GiR2GkGJi3DcnVyA=CyxV6PoRCwjxyeY89pB=uDPHPoO9Ww@mail.gmail.com> User-Agent: Mutt/184.108.40.206i Doug, In order to be fair to banquet attendees, I've looked at the four previous flyers, to see how the what-to-bring was assigned. For: A=appetizer S=side D=dessert A-D brought S 3-years, and A once. E-G brought A 2-years, D once, and S once. H-M brought S 3-years, and D once. N-Z brought D 2-years, A once, and S once. #-------------------------------------- So, this year (2017), it should be: H-M Appetizer E-G,N-Z Side A-D Dessert #-------------------------------------- I hope this makes sense.
