Western Cavers -
As many of you have heard, a small group of us has been working for a couple of years to bring the annual NSS convention to Ely, Nevada in the summer of 2016. If approved, this event would be an outstanding opportunity for western cavers to interact with the national and global community of cavers from across the United States and beyond.
There has never been a national NSS convention in Nevada and we hope to deliver the first in 2016. Both grottos in Nevada have endorsed our efforts and will play a vital role in our production plans once we are approved to move forward. We have also asked the officers of the Western Region to discuss this proposal at their annual business meeting this weekend in California.
In June, our exploratory production team submitted a bid to the society's board of governors for their review. At next month's BoG meeting in Florida, we have been informed they will vote on our proposal. So far, response from all quarters has been supportive of our efforts. We have formed a multi-agency advisory team to ensure any impact to sensitive caves in the area will be kept to an absolute minimum. In addition, we are actively working with the city leadership of Ely, Nevada to integrate our event plans with the resources in their community. Needless to say, they are quite interested in bringing this event to their area.
The year 2016 is particularly important to us because it will be the 75th anniversary of the NSS. Additionally, 2016 is also the 30th anniversary of Great Basin National Park and the 100th anniversary of the US National Park Service. We are actively working with both organizations to produce an outstanding celebration in Nevada and we hope you're there to join us!
Subject to BoG Act 56-274, all convention bids are to be circulated to all board members and to NSS organizations active in the vicinity of the proposed convention at least 30 days in advance of the meeting at which they are to be considered. If you wish, you may download our bid proposal here:
If you have any questions regarding our proposal, please feel free to contact me directly. Assuming the board votes in our favor, you can expect us to reach out to all grottos and regions in the coming months and years as our plans progress.
