UTAH - TIMPANOGOS GROTTO OF THE N.S.S.
GET INVOLVED WITH THE TIMPANOGOS GROTTO

We invite all interested cavers to get involved with the Timpanogos Grotto. We offer opportunities to explore, map, dig, discover, clean, learn, and enjoy the caves of Utah. New cavers are usually fascinated with exploration, but this desire is quickly converted to desires for preservation of the precious natural resources. At first the grotto members may seem like elitists trying to restrict non-members from accessing caves. The truth is that the Timpanogos Grotto strives to offer education to any groups or individuals so that the delicate cave features that have taken thousands and millions of years to form are not destroyed by the unaware.

RESTRICTED CAVE ACCESS: Yes, many of the caves in Utah are gated, but they are completely accessible to those willing to comply with the requirements of the cave’s management plan. This includes certain seasons of cave closure to protect the cave habitat, and limited group sizes to protect the cave features. Each cave has different managers and access requirements.

TIMPANOGOS GROTTO MEETINGS
MONTHLY MEETINGS - We invite all interested cavers to attend.
CAVE TRIPS
Cave trips are announced at each monthly meeting. This is where the major source of interaction occurs. Trip leaders are responsible to decide whether those that want to participate are qualified for the trip. New cavers with little or no rope experience would be excluded from vertical caving trips, yet welcomed to the horizontal trips.
MAPPING
There are several mapping projects happening throughout the state. Whether you are an experienced mapper, or just have the desire to learn, there are plenty of opportunities to participate.
PRESERVATION
A top priority of any cave trip is preservation and clean-up. Some of our trips are specifically targeted at clean-up or restoration. This may include trash clean-up or graffiti removal.
YOUTH GROUP TRAINING
The Timpanogos Grotto is very proud of their developed “Cave Safely - Cave Softly” youth program. This program was developed in association with the BSA and is taught to groups throughout the state, in an effort to educate young cavers to help them safely explore and protect our natural resources.
CAVE ACCESS MANAGEMENT
Many of Utah’s caves have been gated and have specific management plans in place. Some are privately managed, while others are BLM managed. We will attempt to provide accurate and up to date information in the cave portion of this website. If you would like to be involved in the management of a specific cave, then we encourage you to do so. While the non-Grotto members might view this as a restriction, we want to assure you that these protective measures are vital to the preservation of the cave.
COMMITTEES
Please volunteer for a committee. The Timpanogos Grotto is run by an all volunteer staff and we can use help from every interested caver.
