ForewordThe Speleo Digest, an annual project of the National Speleological Society, is more than just a compilation of articles from grotto and regional publications. It is a reflection of the time, energy, and enthusiasm that cavers put into caves and caving and portrays the NSS as an organization made up of a diverse group of individuals pursuing a multitude of activities related to a common interest.The first volume of the Speleo Digest was published in 1956. The NSS has been responsible for all volumes since 1967. The Society's large reserve of volunteers has provided, and continues to provide, the editorial manpower necessary to produce the Speleo Digest Series. Current and future volume editors will be working closely with contributors to improve the quality and readability of the publication. Readers and contributors are urged to contact the Series Editor to relate ideas and offer suggestions on how to improve the Digest. One of our goals is to publish the Digest within two years of the Series year. The reader is cautioned that the material contained therein has not been reviewed by any expert or technical review committee. Material reprinted in a Speleo Digest is not necessarily correct or safe and in no way represents the opinion or recommendations of the National Speleological Society. The caves and karst areas described in any Speleo Digest may have become sensitive or off-limits to cavers since the time of publication. With that in mind, individuals should make a point of contacting local cavers or grottos in the areas they wish to visit prior to planning trips.
