WIND CAVE PROJECT

Wind Cave in South Dakota is one of the great maze caves of the world, and has been surveyed to a length of 145.37 miles as of March 2016. The Wind Cave Project is an official project of the Colorado Grotto, but is open to non-CG members. Volunteers conduct exploration, survey, and inventory in Wind Cave National Park. Trip leaders must be approved by, and receive training from, the NPS. Sketchers must also be approved by the NPS. The Park designates the 2nd Saturday of each month for survey trips. Caving volunteers bunk in a Park building complete with kitchen and showers on Friday and Saturday nights. The winter months are the most active time for Colorado cavers at Wind Cave. The land is the private property adjacent to the commercially-operated Cave of the Winds. Trips must be led by designated trip leaders. The WCP is an official project of the National Speleological Society and governed by a board of directors in cooperation with Cave of the Winds management. Active months are October through April.
