Sandia Grotto

We are a caving club that is dedicated to the exploration, conservation, and protection of caves.

We meet the first Tuesday of every month, 6:00 pm, at the location shown below. Programs start at 6:30 pm. New members and visitors are always welcome.

The new book 12 Miles From Daylight will be available at the Grotto Meeting. This book, published by the Fort Stanton Cave Study Project just two days before the NSS Convention, was a big hit and if you weren't able to attend the convention, now is your chance to view the book. The Sandia Grotto usually has an interesting program with a "Cave" flavor each month. When we know in advance the nature of the program we will post it here on our home page so that you can make plans to attend. Come join us at 6:00 pm to meet the cavers and tell us your interests. We usually start the program at 6:30 pm before our regular business meeting. Everyone is welcome to stay and join us in that discussion as well as join us after 9:00 at a local establishment for additional trip planning. NOTE: starting in July, 2016, the meeting will start 30 minutes earlier. Past programs are HERE.

The June 2017 NSS Convention was held at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. We will be posting some photos on the Convention Page and have moved some of the related information to that page.

Sandia Grotto provides volunteer support to the USFS in a graffiti cleanup of New Mexico's

Sandia Cave

Also located in our back yard... We recently updated the 10 year old Sandia Grotto sign along the trail to the cave so that visitors could locate this web site. Information on the results of this on-going restoration project is available HERE. We make monthly trips to this site to police the area for trash and any new graffiti.

The Grotto also provides monthly caving opportunities including cave survey training at a local cave. If you are interested, please visit us at one of our monthly meetings or contact the Grotto Chairman.

The Sandia Grotto meeting location is the Central United Methodist Church location next to the UNM campus.

Central United Methodist Church, 201 University Blvd. NE, Room 301 & 303. (Look for last minute changes at the door.)

Albuquerque, NM

Park on the east side of the building and enter through the door on the NE corner. We now meet on the floor just above the NE entry door in Rooms 301 & 303. Often the doors to the building will be locked around 6:30 P. M. or before, so if you arrive after that time please text or call Dave at 360.929.2233 for the access code if you need it.

(This is a test of your map reading skills. If you have limited map skills, we can teach you how to survey caves at a monthly hands-on survey project in a local cave and help you make your own maps.)
