ABOUT THE NSS:
Founded in 1941, the NSS is the largest membership organization dedicated to caves & caving. Composed of over 8,000 members and 250+ local chapters - known as grottos - we connect cavers so they can explore, study and conserve caves worldwide.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Operations Division Head manages the Information Technology Division of the society, ensuring that those technological systems effectively and securely support the mission statement and other divisions. The Division Head oversees the NSS’ tech stack and the volunteers who manage it. That includes:
- NSS AWS Instance
- NSS Plesk Virtual Hosting Environment w/90+ websites including Caves.org
- NSS Membership Database
- NSS IT Support Services (Google Workspaces, etc.)
- Various other NSS technical platforms
GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage/support team running AWS instance hosting the organization’s Plesk environment, ensuring uptime, security, and optimal performance.
- Ensure ongoing functionality of caves.org WordPress website, including updates, security patches, and backups. Note: Site content is managed by the organization’s Communications Division.
- Manage/support individuals responsible for the organization’s Plesk instance, which hosts 90+ cave-related websites.
- Manage/support team running NSS’ membership database, hosted on a 3rd party platform (YourMembership).
- Set policies and procedures for the above activities.
- Manage volunteers working on the above.
- Fill vacancies for positions working on the above.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams
- Demonstrated project management skills
- Technical understanding of AWS cloud environments and Plesk (virtual hosting), or the ability to learn
- Familiarity with WordPress, or an ability to learn
- Familiarity with database management, including oversight of membership databases
- Excellent problem-solving, inter-department communication, and organizational skills
- Experience in a non-profit setting is a plus
