ABOUT THE NSS:
Founded in 1941, the NSS is the largest membership organization dedicated to caves & caving. Composed of over 8,000 members and 250+ local chapters - known as grottos - we connect cavers so they can explore, study and conserve caves worldwide.
ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Operations Division Head manages the Information Technology Division of the Society, ensuring that those technological systems effectively and securely support the mission statement and other Divisions. The Division Head oversees the NSS’s tech stack and the volunteers who manage it. That includes:
- NSS AWS Instance
- NSS Plesk Virtual Hosting Environment w/90+ websites including Caves.org
- NSS Membership Database
- NSS IT Support Services (Google Workspaces, etc.)
- Various other NSS technical platforms
GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Manage and support the volunteer teams running AWS Instance hosting and the Plesk environment to promote uptime, security, and optimal performance.
- Ensure ongoing functionality of caves.org WordPress website, including updates, security patches, and backups. Note: The website content is managed by the organization’s Communications Division.
- Manage and support volunteers responsible for the organization’s Plesk instance, which hosts 90+ cave-related websites.
- Manage and support volunteers running the NSS’s membership database, hosted on a 3rd party platform (YourMembership).
- Establish and set policies and procedures for the above activities.
- Foster team spirit by inspiring and recognizing volunteer efforts.
- Monitor spending within the Division's budget, and approve/manage invoices, reimbursements, and payments, as needed.
- Resolve Division vacancies and resource gaps.
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS:
- Demonstrated ability to lead and manage teams, with 5+ years of relevant work in Operations, IT, or similar fields (experience in a nonprofit setting is desired).
- Excellent understanding of role and responsibilities, with outstanding project management skills
- Technical understanding of AWS cloud environments and Plesk (virtual hosting), or the desire and ability to learn.
- Familiarity with WordPress, or the desire and ability to learn.
- Familiarity with database management, including oversight of membership databases.
- Demonstrated problem-solving skills to anticipate strategic program needs and risks, willingness to take the initiative to address them, and develop solutions to obstacles, setbacks, and resource gaps.
- Genuine passion for the NSS’s mission and understanding how communications and marketing can promote our important work.
