Communications Division:
Paid (20 hours/month)
    Do you want to share your passion for caves and caving with the world? The National Speleological Society (NSS) is looking for a talented Marketing Manager to share the spirit of exploration, conservation, and fellowship within the caving community and to the public. The Marketing Manager will be responsible for boosting awareness of the value of caves and karst and increasing understanding of the vital work of the NSS in the conservation and protection of underground resources.
    The Marketing Manager will be classified as a Contractor with the NSS. This is a new part-time, remote position in the NSS, with compensation tied to deliverables for the NSS website, social media, newsletter, and related marketing channels. They will work directly with the Communication Division Head, who reports to the Executive Director. The Marketing Manager will oversee a Communications Specialist and also works cross-functionally with a Newsletter Manager, the Website team, and NSS News team.
    About the National Speleological Society Founded in 1941, the NSS is the largest membership organization dedicated to caves & caving in the world. The NSS currently has about 8,500 members that form 250+ chapters worldwide — known as grottos. The NSS promotes responsible cave exploration and fellowship among those interested in caves, and is committed to the conservation of underground environments and the advancement of cave and karst science. The NSS is a strong organization financially, with an annual budget of approximately $1 million. The NSS also partners with a wide array of like-minded organizations to leverage communications and resources related to cave exploration, fellowship, access, conservation, education, and science. Conservation and Science Division, Cave Science Department:
Volunteer (5-10 hours/month)
Do you want to share your passion for caves and caving with others? The National Speleological Society (NSS) is looking for a dedicated volunteer to serve as the Chair of the Research Advisory Committee. A core part of our Society’s mission is to stimulate, recognize, and sponsor the study of caves and karst. To do this, the NSS has endowed funds and donor bequests to be used for cave and karst research by graduate and undergraduate students, educators, and post-doctoral researchers. The NSS Research Grant programs bestow awards across many scientific disciplines, including Biology, Geosciences, Geochemistry, Archaeology, Paleontology, Paleoclimatology, Karst Hydrogeology, Geospatial Sciences, Anthropology, etc.

The Research Advisory Committee (RAC) reports into the Cave Science Department in the Conservation and Science Division. The RAC Chair works with and directly reports to the Conservation & Science Division Head. The Chair will oversee a Committee to administer the Research Grant programs and NSS Projects. The NSS Conservation and Science Division consists of the Cave Management Department, Cave Conservation Department, and Cave Science Department.

Operations Division:
Volunteer (20 hours/month)

The Operations Division Head manages the Information Technology Division of the Society, ensuring that those technological systems effectively and securely support the mission statement and other Divisions. The Division Head oversees the NSS’s tech stack and the volunteers who manage it. That includes:

  • NSS AWS Instance
  • NSS Plesk Virtual Hosting Environment w/90+ websites including Caves.org
  • NSS Membership Database
  • NSS IT Support Services (Google Workspaces, etc.)
  • Various other NSS technical platforms

Communications Division:
Volunteer (10/hours per week (but variable throughout the year))
The National Speleological Society (NSS) is looking for a dedicated volunteer to serve as the Head of the Communications Division. The Communications Division Head oversees all internal and external communication of the Society. The Division Head is responsible for managing teams within the Division and making sure that the NSS does its best possible job at convincing members and the public why caves matter, why the NSS matters, and how volunteers can get involved. Practically, this position requires professional skills for the management, development, and implementation of the NSS’s communication plans that align all of the Society’s messaging with our mission.
