NSS Opens Search for Its Next Executive Director
The National Speleological Society is looking for its next Executive Director to help lead the organization into its next chapter.
Founded in 1941, the National Speleological Society is the largest membership organization dedicated to caves and caving. With more than 8,000 members and over 250 local chapters (known as grottos), the NSS brings together people who explore, study, and work to protect caves and karst worldwide.
The Executive Director will lead the Society’s day-to-day operations and work closely with the Board of Governors, staff, division heads, volunteers, and members to strengthen the organization and advance its mission. This role calls for a collaborative and strategic leader who can work effectively across a diverse, volunteer-driven organization — while helping build the systems and resources needed for its continued success.
The key priorities for the Executive Director will be to:
- Strengthen organizational systems and capacity to support the Society’s long-term effectiveness and sustainability
- Foster productive collaboration among the Board, Staff, Division Heads, Committees, and NSS membership
- Strengthen membership engagement, retention, and growth
- Expand and diversify fundraising, partnerships, and other sources of financial support
- Ensure that NSS programs, properties, and operations effectively advance the Society’s mission and strategic priorities
