A Historic First: The NSS Announces Its Inaugural Executive Director

We are thrilled to announce that — after years of member-informed discussion, planning, and preparation — the National Speleological Society has officially hired its first Executive Director: Dr. Annette Engel (NSS #31319).
This marks a transformative moment in the evolution of the NSS. Annette is a lifelong caver, a renowned scientist, and a deeply respected member of the Society who brings both a compelling vision and decades of experience to this pivotal role.
Having devoted her career to work that embodies every facet of the NSS mission — from the scientific study of caves and karst, to the protection and stewardship of these environments, and the promotion of responsible exploration and meaningful fellowship — we are confident that she is an exceptional fit for this role.
As Executive Director, Annette will oversee the NSS’s daily operations, support and grow our vibrant volunteer community, expand outreach, and support the caving community at every level — ensuring the NSS continues to thrive for generations to come.
“I have been an NSS member since 1989. In addition to being a professor for most of my career, I have a long history of leadership within volunteer-driven nonprofits that focus on cave science, education, and conservation,” Annette reflects. Adding, “This is truly a rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and I am deeply honored to serve as the NSS’s first Executive Director.”
Her vision for the role includes:
- Enhancing communication with members
- Strengthening volunteer engagement and recruitment
- Building partnerships with agencies and institutions
- Expanding the visibility and utility of NSS Headquarters
“For over 80 years, past and current members have generously supported the NSS in various ways, from volunteering their time to donating money and resources. I am committed to acknowledging this legacy, as well as to improving and broadening opportunities for our members that expand our cave science, conservation, and exploration efforts,” Annette remarks.
We are confident that, under Annette’s leadership, the Society’s mission and impact will continue to grow, and the NSS will be well-positioned for a vibrant and sustainable future .
What’s Next?
Annette will officially begin in her new role on August 4, 2025. After that, she will work closely with Division Heads, volunteers, and the Board of Governors to shape the Society’s path forward.
Ultimately, this transition is intended to be a collaborative one — and we’re excited to have you on this journey with us. So expect regular updates on NSS activities, changes, and volunteer opportunities that let you get involved.
We hope you’ll join us in warmly welcoming Annette into this historic new role. With her leadership, we’re confident the future of the NSS is brighter than ever.
