Our NSS Nature Preserve at Mill Creek Sink in Alachua, Florida is under imminent threat from nearby proposed development.

Mill Creek Sink Nature Preserve is considered one of the most significant hydrological and geological features in Alachua County, FL. However, multiple commercial and residential developments are being planned on parcels surrounding our preserve, compounding the risk of stormwater and non-point source pollution which may drain into Mill Creek Sink.

Why this matters

Mill Creek Sink drains a basin of more than 70 square miles. Ultimately, that water ends up in the Florida Aquifer. Scientific research indicates that water from Mill Creek Sink emerges at three priority (yet impaired) Florida springs that are vital habitat for wildlife. Biological studies in the sink and other nearby underwater caves and springs document rare species and the potential for new species exists. Additionally, the cave is still being surveyed, possibly extending the underwater cavern farther than its known extent.

Inadequate stormwater planning has the potential to significantly impact the water flowing into the spring and, by extension, Florida groundwater.

How we are responding

The NSS has hired Sunshine Law to represent our interests as a land owner in protecting this valuable underground hydrological resource. They will help review the applications for zoning variances and building permits related to these developments.

Using our” Litigation to Protect Caves Fund,” we can pay for consultation, research, and sustained legal defense to ensure the high-density development which could impact our Mill Creek Sink Nature Preserve is meeting criteria for responsible development, thus ensuring the protection of this fragile underwater habitat.

How you can help

We need your help to maintain funding for this legal battle and future legal issues. Your financial donations will ensure our ability to protect this resource for NSS members and the public, as well as ensure we don’t deplete revenue from our Litigation to Protect Caves Fund.

Thank you for supporting cave conservation and management, as well as our Litigation to Protect Caves Fund. For more information, please contact preserves@caves.org.
