Want to help the NSS build a vertical training tower in Bill Cuddington’s honor? Donate today and help us realize the vision of a vertical training tower at headquarters.

William F. “Bill” Cuddington, a singular figure in American caving widely recognized as the “Father of Vertical Caving,” passed away in 2022. Cuddington’s innovations and use of single rope techniques in the early 1950’s faced initial opposition, yet his meticulous approach and down-home demeanor ultimately won over the caving community. He accomplished remarkable feats in caving, including pioneering descents of pits such as Suprise Pit(403’) in 1961 and Golondrinas in 1967(1,233’). Cuddington’s dedication extended beyond exploration; he was also deeply involved in training and fitness, maintaining a rigorous regimen even amidst serious health challenges. His legacy includes a lasting influence on caving techniques and the affectionate nickname “Vertical Bill.” Bill Cuddington’s life celebrated nearly 89 years of adventure, innovation, and mentorship.

Vertical Bill’s Tower is the perfect way to honor Bill Cuddington’s legacy.  Our hope is to create a premier outdoor education facility that will draw cavers from all over the country to our beautiful Headquarters.  The tower will offer a safe learning environment where a number of organizations will be able to educate on Single Rope Technique, rigging and rescue.

We’ve set a fundraising goal of $150,000. We hope to have preliminary plans drawn up soon.  Help us build the future of the National Speleological Society and memorialize our dear Bill Cuddington at the same time by making a donation to the “Vertical Tower Fund today!”
