Hoods

HOME / VIRTUAL CAVE / Hoods

Given their rarity, hoods are poorly understood. Known examples are hypothesized to have formed when dogtooth spar was later covered in iron minerals. Water then caused a subsequent dissolution of the underlying spar before draining. The iron hood remained.

X-Ray diffraction shows that the hoods are formed out of goethite. The presence of graphite indicates the possible involvement of hydrocarbons.
